"Oh" No The Good Guy

The protagonist is almost always the character everyone empathizes. A piece of fiction where the author wants the audience to empathize the antagonist is “Home”. A couple of the supposedly villains the I caught myself feeling sympathy for was the main alien Oh and the Gorg commander.

Oh, along with is many other “friends” from another planet come to the planet Earth to take over and hide from their biggest villain, The Gorg. All the humans were sent to one place on the Earth except for on young girl named Tip (short for Gratuity) who is searching for her lost mom. Oh isn’t like all the other characters in the way that he has a unique personality that most of his kind seem to find annoying. He decided to have a house warming party and instead of inviting just his “friends”, he invited the whole galaxy including the Gorg. This made his kind even more mad at him and that’s how he met Tip. It takes a while for Tip to get use to Oh but after a while, they end up being best friends and helping each other out in the tough situations they’re in.

At first, you think Oh is just one of their typical aliens, but after watching for a couple minutes, you discover that he’s nothing like them. Because of him being so different, he can’t seem to find any friends and ends up alone a lot. He is suppose to be one of the bad guys but he turns out to be the character I empathize the most. All he tries to do is talk to people but none of them are willing to give him a chance except for the human Tip. When they are going to find her mother, you can see how nice of an alien he is and that unlike all of his other species, he cares about his family and friends and just wants to make them happy.

Another villain the I empathized in this move was the Gorg once I found out why he was so mad. He was always finding where they settled and destroying their homes, it was like as if he was looking for something. It turned out that the item the king was holding contained the eggs to the whole next Gorg generation and this man that was looking for it was the last one alive. All this Gorg wanted was to keep his kind going and didn’t want to cause any trouble. This makes me have no bad feelings for this villain, Gorg. Seeing him play with the newly hatched Gorg’s, you realise how cute of character he actually is.

This film was able to capture a lot of wonderful feelings thanks to these villains. I always seem to enjoy movies and books more when the author makes the viewers or readers empathize the antagonist and I believe it makes a better story.

Psychotic or Comedic?

During a film or movie, there are a lot of characteristics of the archetype. Some are bad, some are good, and some are just regular characters with funny or annoying personalities. A couple characters that are clumsy, funny, and sometimes annoying archetypes are Spongebob from the show Spongebob Squarepants and Buddy from the movie Elf. Another archetype is Scooby from the show Scooby Doo.

The show Spongebob Squarepants have a lot of characters that are funny and clumsy. One character that particularly stands out is the main character Spongebob. Spongebob has a very strong personality in the way that he is hyper, loud, and carefree which I think are qualities that make someone funny. A lot of people think he is rather stupid and annoying but I think that it is quite funny and the things he does make him a very funny character. His lack of being smart and sense of how things work make him the kind of character that causes a lot of trouble and usually the one to be most clumsy. One of my favorite scenes from this television show is when Spongebob and Sandy go to a karate camp and Spongebob competes with the master there and grows a very funny looking mustache just like the master.

Buddy the Elf is another perfect example of a clumsy and funny/annoying archetype. He always seems to be getting in trouble and making people annoyed but I think his actions are hilarious. One particular scene I enjoyed was when he was at the store “North Pole” and there was someone dressed up as Santa. When Buddy went up to see him, he noticed it was not the Santa he knew and ripped off his fake beard. All the children started screaming and Buddy and the Santa started fighting. It ended with the whole store being torn up and the children traumatized.

Scooby Doo isn’t quite like these other two characters. He does have the same archetype, but he expresses it in a different way. Scooby becomes humorous when he gets scared because his actions are loud and he gets scared very easily. Him being scared also makes him more prone to getting hurt or bumping into something which usually triggers somebody's emotions in a positive way that makes them laugh. My favorite thing Scooby does is when he is scared, he jumps into his best friends, Shaggy’s arms or the opposite way around.

Over all the different types of archetypes, this kind is my favorite because one of my favorite things to do is laugh. This type is funny and very clumsy which makes it very hard to resist and I personally think this is the best type.

Emily The Explorer

Every cartoon character has special advantages that a regular person wouldn’t have. Some are more advanced than others and if I would be able to trade places with one, I’d make sure I would have a lot of special talents or hobbies. I think if I had to choose one cartoon to pick, I’d choose Dora. Dora gets to travel all over the world, gets to have a monkey as a best friend, and gets to save a lot of animals.

Traveling the world is something I aspire to do, being able to do it with no expenses would be a dream come true. Unless there are some behind-the-scenes of Dora paying for all her trips, she gets to go wherever she wants for free and that would be amazing. She gets to go to really cold places like the Arctic and extremely hot places like Australia. With all the different places she’d go, she would be able to experience an abundant amount of cultures and have a taste of how unique and different everyone is. Learning new languages, trying new foods, and getting a little bit of knowledge about their history would all be things she’d get to experience and enjoy.

Being able to travel everywhere is one thing, but being able to save a lot of animals lives would be amazing. Not only does she get to save these animals, she also gets to have them as her new friends and meet a new one every day. Dora has the chance to be a hero to all of these hurt or lost animals which I think is a dream any animal lover would adore. There are a lot of animals that don’t even get a chance at being saved because they live in a very remote place with no one around but Dora gives them that second chance. She brings hope to the animal species and allows them to not worry and have limits because she will always be there to save the day.

Having a monkey as a best friend and knowing for sure that he will never attack and try to kill you would be another thing I’d love. He seems like such a nice character and he is always there to support her and help her save animals, you couldn’t ask much more of a monkey. This is not your typical monkey either, this monkey talks. She would never have to feel lonely on her long trips because she’ll always have him to talk to and be with. He’d be able to climb high with you up in trees and help out to make sure Swiper never gets his way. Also, he’d be very low maintenance because all he eats are bananas.

Dora has a lot of advantages the typical person wouldn’t have. Over all the cartoon characters, I truly believe that she has the most intriguing and special advantages. Traveling across the world, saving animals, and having a talking monkey as her best friend would be a dream come true.

Five Worst Foods

There are a lot of disgusting foods in this world. Some are just disgusting to me, and some are unbearable to most people. A couple things that I think are extremely gross are lemon meringue pie, hamburger helper, chicken pot pie, eggs, and black licorice.

5. Lemon Meringue Pie
Pies are suppose to be sweet, light and simple. However, this pie has a very strong sour taste and the ingredients are disproportionate. This pie has more meringue topping on it than what is suppose to be the most important part of the pie, the lemon filling. Not only does it combine the wrong textures together, its tastes clash between the meringue topping and the lemon filling. Something so condense and something so fluffy and light should never be put together.

4. Hamburger Helper
This may seem like the best way to get in a quick meal but in reality, you will end up not eating anything because of the horrible taste that comes from this combination. You can’t really expect a lot from a boxed dinner but this really goes lower than your expectations. The mix that comes with this has a very weird and powdery taste and doesn’t mix well with all the other ingredients and also seems to give a bad after-taste. In my opinion, hamburger should never be mixed with pasta unless you are an expert chef that knows what you're doing.

3. Chicken Pot Pie
Chicken Pot Pie in my opinion, is one of the weirdest pies created, combined with ingredients you would never put together any other time. Some people love this pie, but when I decided to try it, I discovered a bone in it and it scarred me for life so now whenever I hear the word “chicken pot pie” it makes my stomach turn. I think the person that created this just tried to find a simple way to cook a chicken dinner and had some pie crust that was about to go bad and put it to use.

2. Eggs
An egg, if you think about it is not appealing in the least bit. This hard, oval shell filled with gooey insides came from inside a hen. There’s always the possibility of there being a baby chicken in it too but if you decide you want one, you’re going to be eating what could have been a cute, baby chicken. Other than all those gross factors, there’s also the post-cooking trauma where you end up with a horrible texture and taste that could never be eaten alone (not even ketchup could mask the taste).

1. Black Licorice
Red licorice tastes so good, I can’t possibly understand how they could concoct such an unbearable taste from something so similar. Not only is it hated by most people, but it puts your health at risk if you eat too much. The fluid retention from increased sodium retention raises your blood pressure and puts strain on your heart and lungs. Although most of the black licorice sold in the U.S is not made from the licorice root, it is still very bad for you. It also leaves a very bad after taste that remains in your mouth for a long time. Over all these horrible foods, black licorice rises to the top of the list.

Time Capsule

Five items I would include in a time capsule are:
  1. A video of landscape
  2. Latest technology
  3. Ipod with latest music
  4. Newspaper
  5. Examples of our taste in fashion
If my community decided to store a time capsule the would be only opened a hundred years from now in the year 2116, one of the things I’d like to put in it would be a video of the landscape where it was buried and of the people that put their things in it. Having a video of the landscape would help show them how much the area around there has changed and what it used to be like. Also, They’d be able to see who the people were that put their belongings into this box and help create the history that is with the pieces.

Something else that I’d like to put into the time capsule is a phone or some type of our latest technology. This would show how much the technology has evolved and they would be able to try the device and compare it to what they have. It would also act as a piece of history that they could cherish and show to others. It would prove to them how much things have changed in time and how privileged they are to live in the latest technology.

A thing that I think would be a great object to put into the time capsule is an Ipod with a playlist of music on it. I think this would be a great idea because they would be able to have a taste of our history music wise. The lyrics in the songs would teach the people listening what we were feeling at the time and how things were in the world. They would be able to listen to the instruments we use and compare them to what they use and also, they might enjoy our music because a lot of people now listen to music that is around fifty years old.

Another thing that would be interesting to have in a time capsule is the latest newspaper. This shows the latest news and what is going on in our area. Also, it would show pictures of residents and landscapes, include the weather for the upcoming week, and discuss the issues we’re going through. I find it interesting just to go look at the newspapers from a couple years ago so I’d imagine they’d love going back into history and seeing what it was like. Compared to then, they would probably think the society we have today is very simple because they would have a lot of new issues but would have also solved a lot of the problems we would have today.

Fashion is a way we express ourselves. It shows what type of person we are and our personality. This would be a great item because fashion changes all the time and I think they’d enjoy seeing what we wore and how we wore it. Because it is a long time before they will open the box, the fashion might have returned back to style which would be very interesting. By then, they may have a lot softer fabrics or different ways to make their shirts and be mesmerized by the way we made them.

Dear people of the future,

My name is Emily and I was born in the month of September in 2000. I am writing you this letter on the day we put it in the ground which is April 27th 2016. My house is located past the Blackville school on the top of the hill. I have a mother and a father and three brothers. This size family is pretty typical for this area and time.

Today is like any day, we have a typical seven hour day at school with two breaks and five classes. We have a few extra curricular activities such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, drama, choir, badminton, and student council. Because most of our time here is with the snow, we don’t have a lot of summer sports that are played outside. Something in this community that has been happening for a couple years now is not being able to keep a salmon. Salmon are one of our only tourist attractions and one of the favorite things to do here and not being allowed to keep them arouses a lot of the residents. This particular fish was becoming harder to catch because of its low population so this is why they had to make keeping the fish against the law.

Time is changing fast so your hobbies and traditions are probably a lot different from mine. The temperature, scenery, and technology will all be so different from now (2016) and from my perspective, your world will probably be a lot more manageable than ours. Solve problems and make the world an even better place!

George the Giraffe

1. It’s summer time in Africa; a time where everyone gets together with their sunglasses on and enters into a talent show. Everyone seems to have a special talent except for one little giraffe named George.

2. George doesn’t know what to do so he goes and asks his best friend Henry the Hedgehog.

3. “Hey Henry! What are you doing for the talent show?” George asks.

4. “I can curl up into a ball in under two seconds! I’ve been working on it for months and now I think I could be the fastest in the world,” Explains Henry.

5. “Wow, maybe I can do that too!” said George in an exciting tone.

6. So George tries to curl up in a tight ball but it takes him forever. “My legs are too long to do this,” George says in a sad voice. “Thanks anyways Henry.”

7. While George is on his way home, he comes across a fish in the lake.

8. “Hi little fish,” George says.

9. “Hello George! Want to see my talent for the show?”

10. “Sure!” said George hoping that he may be able to do the trick too.

11. “I can jump through this really small hoop and do a back flip!”

12. “Maybe I can do that too”. George tries to go through the hoop but it is was to small, only his ear could fit through it. He couldn’t even do a back flip because of how long his neck was.

13. “I’m sorry George but I’m sure you will find something to do for tomorrow,” says the little fish.

14. “I hope so,” says George as he starts on his journey home again.
15. Once George gets home, his mother is curious to what he decided to do. Unable to tell her what he wants to do because he hasn’t decided, he gets really upset and goes to bed.

16. The morning of the show, everyone is very excited for the talent show except for poor George. On the way to the show with no talent, a beaver practicing juggling his hula hoops loses one by mistake and it flies in the air and goes around George’s neck.

17. “Ahhh!” George yells. He tries to take it off but all it does is twirl around his neck uncontrollably.

18. “Wow George, look! You’re hula hooping that hula hoop around your neck!” Says the juggler with excitement.

19. “I never knew I could do this!”

20. Finally, George found a talent nobody else had and was able to show it to all his friends as they cheered him on. George was so happy with his newly discovered talent. They all went out for ice cream after and had a wonderful life.

Tips on Writing Stories For Children

The information I found particularly helpful was the information about having dialogue. I did not realize how important dialogue could be, I thought it was just a good adder some writers use. Dialogue can be used to increase tension and/or help explain a situation and I probably wouldn't have thought to use this technique if I didn't read this tip. Some information that is similar to what I wrote in my previous blog is the importance of dialogue. If I had done this before, I probably wouldn't  have used this excellent technique. I found the examples they put in the article helped a lot with explaining how to use dialogue properly and also showing how enthusiasm can make something sound a lot better and be much more catchy. I think being graded on how unique the story is should be a part of the rubric because children stories should be cheerful and interesting so it can keep their attention.

Analyzing Children Stories

Kitty Wants a Box
The main character in this short story is a kitty. This character is an animal with short, light brown hair. There is no dialogue in this short story but it has very simple sentences so it is easy to understand. The conflict in this story is trying to find the perfect size box for her kitties and herself. I think this can be understood by young children because it is a simple conflict but I doubt children can relate to it unless they like boxes. The conflict is resolved by finding the perfect box for the kitties and herself. The message of this story is to not settle and find the perfect fit for you.

Fruit Salad
The main character in the short story "Fruit Salad" is the apple. This character is a bright red fruit that is starting to get old. The dialogue in this story is between the fruits discussing what they want to do with their lives. This would help the children reading it understand what is going on in the story and understand what they are feeling. The problem in this story is the apple trying to figure out what it wants to do with its life. They make this conflict easy to understand by adding dialogue. I think some children could relate to this conflict because some people have a hard time making decisions. It is resolved by finding his old friends and going to a compost so it can make new friends and tell stories The lesson in this story is to eat your fruits and not let them go to waste.

The Littlest Knight
The main character in this story was a blacksmith. He was very short guy and poor with brown hair and the hopes to marry the princess of the land. There is a little bit of dialogue between him, the king and the bees. The king was making fun of him which helped identify his feelings as being embarrassed because of how short he was. Him speaking to the bees showed his kindness and generosity. The conflict is him being short and it being hard for the king to make him knight and also trying to figure out the riddle the dragon has to make it go away. I think this conflict may be hard for younger children but older children should be able to understand the conflict and able to identify it. This is resolved by the short knight winning the battle against the dragon and getting the love of his life. The message of this story is to not judge a book by its cover and to give people a chance.

These three stories are similar because they all have important messages for young kids. The writers give the kids a topic that they can relate to and is easily understand so they can understand the topic and conflict. They are all different because they have different story lines and conflicts. Also, they vary on the difficulty of reading. I think these stories would be appealing to young children because they have a lot of colourful pictures that represent what was going on. For example, the story "Kitty Wants a Box" was very short and simple but the pictures helped add characteristic and would catch a young persons eye.

The Perfect Quick Lunch; The Grilled Cheese Sandwich

A grilled cheese is a quick lunch that is very simple to make but sometimes you want more than just some bread and cheese. Adding bacon is the perfect match for this cheesy delight. It also adds a lot of taste to this lunch that can sometimes be bland. This guide will help you create the perfect bacon grilled cheese.

1. In order to make this special grilled cheese, you will need two pieces of bread, butter, a cheese slice or two, and bacon. You will also need a frying pan and a spatula.

2. Your first step is to cook your bacon (you will probably want 3-4 pieces). To do this, you will have to turn on the heat to medium and put a little bit of oil or butter in the frying pan to decrease the possibility of it burning (make sure it is fully cooked before you take them off).
3. While your bacon is cooking, you can start preparing your bread by buttering both sides and placing a cheese slice on the bread to speed up the process. You can put one to two slices of cheese on depending on how cheesy you want it.
.
4. Once your bacon is cooked, place it on top of the cheese and place the other piece of bread on top and then it is time to cook. Be careful not to let any of the ingredients fall out so it can cook properly.

5. This is when you have to really observe your grilled cheese so you can cook it to fit your taste perfectly and not burn it (I’d suggest putting it on medium heat). Once the side touching looks cooked enough for your liking, flip it over using a spatula and cook the other side around the same time as you did before. When it is fully cooked, all that’s left is to take it off the heat, cut it in half and enjoy.

How to Make a Grilled Cheese Review

A characteristic that makes a good how-to article is having effective pictures and/or videos. Some people have a hard time following or understanding written instructions so having a picture will help those people follow the instructions better. Making sure that your information is in extensive detail and clear is also important because a wrong step in the process can effect the end product majorly. I feel like this was a good article because it had a lot of small steps instead of a could large and confusing steps and the pictures were very effective. This how-to article could improve by making a more catchy title so it can seem more intriguing. Its title is also its biggest weak point. Nobody would want to read this great article because the title gives it a false advertising of being bad. A statement that should be a part of the rubric is "this article contains effective pictures that help explain what is needed to do in the situation".

Finding Forrester

Finding Forrester is a movie released on the twelfth of January in 2000 and was produced by Columbia. It was directed by Gus Van Sant who is also a screenwriter, painter, photographer, musician, and an author. The main actors in this movie are Sean Connery, and Rob Brown. The person that wrote this movie was Mike Rich. Finding Forrester was his first screenwriting he had ever written and he was awarded a Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He named this movie after his high school English teacher, Mrs.Forrester. Mike is best known for his writing on sports-related films.

This movie stars a male character, Jamal who is an inspiring teenager that grew up in the Bronx. He doesn't realize that the bad choice he made was going to end up being the greatest thing that happened to him. Jamal is gifted with wonderful writing skills and a talent for athletics. He tries to fit in with the people at his school but finds it hard to not voice his opinion on school topics because his friends will outcast him if they found out how smart he is. After a life changing event, Jamal gets guidance from a grouchy old man with a lot of secrets. His life will be forever changed.

This movie is more than just a story with a plot, theme, and climax, it has meaning and gives people hope. Movies usually have to have action scenes or a lot of drama but Finding Forrester was simply remarkable and able to catch anybody’s attention. One film I thought it had a lot of similarities with was “To Kill a Mockingbird”. Jamal’s character has a lot of hidden potential like Boo Radley but they were both too shy to share it. I find they both are unique, misunderstood characters that let their peers pressure them into things they would not normally do which made people think less of them.

To me, this is an older film but the quality of it is excellent. I was very surprised by how well the camera work was and the purity of the acting. I thought that the acting by “Jamal” and “William” was superb compared to everyone else and they had a special touch that made the film even better almost making me feel like it was based on a true story. Another thing I liked about the movie was the old music that was played at the scenes with drama, suspense, or action. It gave it a feeling that allowed the watchers to feel connected to the film and able to connect to the characters by feeling the same way they felt.

I think the theme of the story is friendship. Throughout the whole film, it displayed a lot of affection through friendship and they helped each other through hard times. They both needed someone to share their thoughts with and to be themselves around so I think them finding each other was a great advantage to the both of them. The theme in Finding Forrester is very strong along with all the other parts to it.

Finding The Elements In Finding Nemo Reviews

The review I chose was The New York Times. One of the reasons why this was my favorite review was because of the extensive detail they put into creating an image of the main characters. My favorite character was Dory, so them talking about this loving character helped me in thinking it was an excellent review. This review was very easy to read even for the people that didn't watch the movie because they gave great detail to the highlights without giving the whole movie away so  if someone wanted to watch the movie they still could after reading the review and not be bored or feel like the ending has been spoiled.

Even though I thought this was they best suited review for Finding Nemo, I still thought there was some weak spots in it. Something I disliked about the review was that it wasn't in the order of how the movie was played. People could get confused with what happened because of it not being in order and not like the movie because of it. Even though it was very well explained, someone that wanted a quick review probably wouldn't choose this review because of how long it is so if they shortened it, I think they would have gotten a lot more readers. Also making it more appealing to the eye would have helped them have more readers and keep them interested in the review.

My favorite genres of movies would be drama, action, comedy, and science-fiction. I think these are my favorite genres because they all seem to be able to catch your attention really easily and be able to hold it. Instead of dragging on about certain details, these types of movies will have new things always happening and have plot twists. I'd like to do reviews on a lot of movies because I like voicing my opinion on things and seeing what other people think of it but if I had to choose a movie to do a review on, I think I'd pick something I didn't enjoy, like Fantastic Mr.Fox.

The Cyclone

As I look around all I see is people suffering with only the bare necessities to survive. It’s just me and my brother to fend for ourselves and we haven’t eaten since the cyclone. All we had was our mother because our father left our mom when he found out she was pregnant and pretends like we don’t exist. Our family was torn, but we didn’t care because we were happy just being together. The cyclone killed my mom. My older brother is trying to be strong for me but I can see how scared he is. We almost had enough money to be able to go to school but now Zachariah has to find a job to buy us food. I try to get money but people won’t hire me because I’m so young.

The air doesn’t have the same fresh feeling that it had before. Now it smells dirty and polluted and tastes like I am eating dirt from all the trauma that happened. I’m longing the taste of fresh fruit but all I taste is the sweat near my mouth about to drip off my face. I hear Zachariah, outside the torn shack we call our home, crying because the stress of being responsible for me is breaking him down and making him weak. Our shack has a mere 15 pieces of wood holding it up with no siding, so at night, when the wind is strong, we have to keep each other warm. We use to have steel sheet as our roof but the strong winds of the cyclone tore it off so now we’re vulnerable to the weather. This was the most difficult period of my life.

Writing Inventory

When I have spare time, I usually like to spend it drawing, watching television shows, or having a nap. I like to draw to express my feelings rather than write them down because I find it much more fun to draw something creative then write paragraphs. My favorite writer is Ruta Sepetys. She is my favorite writer because she wrote one of my favorite books Between Shades of Grey. It was one of the only books that I was able to keep interest in throughout the whole book because I usually have no interest in reading any kind of book. I find the easiest way for me to write is when I am doing a persuasive writing.
When I do a persuasive writing, I never seem to get a writers block and not be able to constantly think of new ideas. When I am just talking to a friend via text message, I never will run out of things to say because I do not have to worry about it being marked or judged by someone so I can have a free mind. A relatively challenging form of writing to me is an essay. I find essays difficult because I feel pressured to get it done and I am always trying to better my writing so it makes me slower and I find myself rushing at the end to get it done. I get my ideas for writing from personal experiences or connections I make with the topic.

I am currently not working on a piece of writing. I was especially proud of the grade nine writing exam I wrote because I was able to do an exceptional job in a short amount of time. For each assignment, I usually do a brainstorm with one or two drafts with lots of room to fix mistakes. I feel one of my strengths as a writer is being descriptive because teachers have commented on it before. A weakness I have as a writer is strong sentence structure because sometimes I can get off topic or say something that will not make sense to other people. My favorite topic choice would be any hobbies I like because I am passionate about them and I think I could write a strong essay about them. A second writing subject would be animals because it is something else I am interested in. A goal I have for writing this semester is to become a strong writer and be confident in what I write. An expectation I have for this course is to learn as much as possible.
